Mirroring others is seen as not knowing your identity and a symtom of BPD, psychopathy, narcissism, schizotypial ,Schizoaffective and schizoid personality disorders, however it is trait of evolution that has kept us alive.
Mimicry, camouflage are all forms of non-human animals and even plants mirroring their surroundings to survive. People start to mirror others they are close to because it allows them to survive and fit in with their group. Mimicry and camouflage is used to blend in with whatever the animal or plant is near to, and this is similar to when people change their hair color, or style and personality to fit in with their surroundings. Changing personality and style is seen as a trait of a mental disorder although it is a common technique in the animal kingdom.
*With that said, changing style and personality and forcing yourself to become slimmer or get surgery to fit in are different things. Changing personality and style isn't from a place of self hate or fear of not being loved, simply an act of adapting to surroundings. Mirroring someone happens naturally, not forced out of fear to fit in. Changing body type and looks to fit in or because your friend is dieting is not the same as mimicry. It stems from the need to fit in and body dysmorphia.Although mimicry is used in the wild, mimicking others in the form of diet buddies, plastic surgery is not a form of mimicry because mimicking is used to help survive , body dysmorphia is not useful in evolution. People may argue that losing weight, plastic surgery is useful that is why mimicking Dying by is mimicry and action. However, dieting and getting plastic surgery is not evolutionary beneficial nor is it healthy in the long-term. Also, dieting and plastic surgery is more societal while mimicry is survival.
