What is it?
Nasty neighbor effect is when animals act aggressively and treat intruders that may be closer to them than predictors that may be farther away.
Explains which behavior?
Not trusting people close to us but trusting strangers with personal information. Ex. Therapist, Prostitutes,a person in line with us at the store, etc.
How does it explain our behavior?
Nasty neighbor effect explains the hypothesis that non-human animals see outsiders as a threat,r due to knowing outsiders are a threat non-human animals know to be alert and on edge to protect themselves against predators. Inner circles can pretend to be friendly and trustworthy but actually an enemy therefore, non-human animals need to protect themselves more from "neighbors.
Paranoia or survival?
The Nasty Neighbor Effect is a fair explanation displaying how people are suspicious of those closest to them for the reason that trusting someone close can cause a person to be betrayed. Nevertheless, knowing someone is an enemy and a threat is easier to stay safe and guarded Nasty Neighbor Effect is one of the various reason why people are cautious of a partner, or friends more than people they hardly know. Non-human animals who are displaying the nasty neighbor effect feel that outsiders are not a threat while fellow colonies (or groups- depending on the species) are a potential threat to their individual survival.
The fear of letting others get close is found in all species.
If the fear of letting someone get close is because of mental illness then why is it displayed in numerous species. If someone is afraid of getting close to you but is comfortable with strangers, it may be because of the nasty neighbor effect.
