We feel anger, sadness, anxious, etc. because it allows us to know we must remove ourselves from a situation we are in.
What is it?
Psychic pain hypothesis and behavioral shutdown model are similar in which they state that we become depressed, anxious, angry because it is our minds way of telling us that we need help from a situation or event. This is evident with "triggers". This is evident when we get angry, or feel anxious in the job we have or being around people that try to make us change for their benefit. Instead of changing ourselves, our mind is telling us we need assistance to find peace and compassion within ourselves. This explains why people who diet or try to feel false happiness fail. We are trying to assert ourselves in a situation that is not meant for us and feeling sad and helpless allows us to realize we may need help with overcoming the desire to be someone we are not. If we are not getting back enough to thrive in a situation, our brain is telling us we need to remove ourselves from it.
How does it relate?
Psychic pain hypothesis and the behavioral shutdown model show that our body and minds know more than we give ourselves credit for. Also, allows us to understand when we must learn from something we do not like or that is not beneficial to us.
If you are around people that want you to change for "the better" even though you may try to lose weight, or be happier you may feel empty inside. This is the psychic pain hypothesis at work because it is trying to tell you to get away from those people who are trying to change you. Help yourself by being around people that accept you for who you are. Even though we may think they are trying to help us, they are not allowing us to be our authentic selves and thus the sadness, emptiness, anger for no reason, anxiety is a symptom of staying in a place that is a false benefit to you. It may seem beneficial on the outside, but at it's core it is only a burden to you. Our mind is telling us, just like our stomach tells us when we are hungry, to get away from the circumstance we are in.
Doesn't mean to break up
Getting away from a life occurrence doesn't necessarily mean to break up with a partner if they did something to upset you. However, it does mean to remove yourself from the event or situation that caused you to feel upset. The emotions you are feeling are telling you that you need to discuss those emotions and feelings with your partner. If you are upset because your partner was talking to another person emotions such as jealousy allow you to know to practice more self-compassion and self-respect and also disuses losing your fear of losing your partner with them. The psychic pain hypothesis demonstrates that walking away from a fight, or an issue until calmed down is more beneficial than sticking around and screaming nonsense because being angry, upset or scared is telling us to remove ourselves from that situation. The psychic pain hypothesis allows us to realize we need something and to ask for it.
Happiness
This is why learning to work with our emotions and mind instead of attempting to achieve happiness at all costs is crucial. If we simply pop a pill when we are sad it will not allow us to observe that we should change a situation that is making us upset. Also, our needs and desires will not be met because we will ignore it for a pill or a smile instead of trying to communicate our desires ,wants and needs to others.
Diet motivators
Dieting and losing weight will only make you hate yourself even more even after a while. Although it may seem great at the start, eventually you will fear gaining weight back and it will take over your life. You are sad and depressed because you are around people who make you feel that way because they are judging your body. The sadness comes from being in places that make you feel worthless because of your body and weight. Instead, of changing yourself, the psychic pain hypothesis shows that we must remove ourselves from those who make us feel less than because of how we look, weigh, or what we eat.
Look around
So, the next time you become angry, anxious or depressed ask yourself what is the reason, what are you needing in that moment? It may be possible you need more tolerance and acceptance from your peers and are not receiving that.
