This enzyme is the reason psychopathy exists.
Monoamine oxidase A shortened to MAO-A is an enzyme responsible for the enzyme MAO from releasing dopamine, serotonin. A lack of this enzyme is commonly found in people who are given the label of having "psychopathy," or "anti-social personality disorder." A low MAO-A contributes frequency outbursts and increased impulsiveness. Less dopamine, serotonin, epinephrine, and norepinephrin are produced in the brain due to a person having a MAO-A enzyme that has lower activity.
Psychopaths have the MAO-L (MAO-low) form of MAO-A enzyme while empaths have the MAO-H (MAO-high) form(Baum,D).
MAO-L is where a decrease in empathy and an increase in apathy comes from for the MAO-A deficiency in some people prohibits them from receiving serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, neurotransmitters that contribute to empathy.
This may explain to some people why they feel no empathy. That is who you are. This trait is great to have to become a surgeon, CEO, and even a manager of a small business or simply a grocery store.
