A form of cold reading, psychics use the rainbow ruse to cover everything "in the rainbow" by discussing a personality trait, and also it's opposite counterpart (Psychological Techniques. n.d.). By covering everything on the entire personality spectrum, it will ensure the person they are scamming will relate to the statement said by the scam artist.
Rainbow ruse is very similar to Barnum statements except differ in the fact they use the one end and the opposite end of a personality trait spectrum.
The psychiatric field uses the rainbow ruse technique to create illnesses out of normal human behaviors and personality traits. "You are afraid of abandonment because you are subconsciously afraid of commitment" so here is a pill and we will train you to take care of that to be what we tell you should be. As stated by username StationaryWaves at Sweet Talk Conversation, Rainbow ruses are always true statements therefore everyone can relate to them. Everyone is afraid of getting hurt, everyone is afraid to settle down. These facts are not unique to only people who have "mental disorders" and this is how the psychiatry field convinces people there is something wrong with them. The rainbow ruse technique is used to cover all bases of human behavior so they can convince you that you have an illness that is actually normal human behavior. Hypersexuality and Hypoactive sexual desire disorder is a great example, one is "too much" sex and the other is "too little" sexual arousal so by covering both ends of the spectrum we are all able to be diagnosed with having a sexual dysfunction.
There is numerous example I could list here, but try to find them next time you see a commercial or an ad for anti-depressants or mood stabilizers.
